Meet Matthew Hunt: Poker Coach & Professional Player
I’m a professional poker player and coach with a background in linguistics and a lifelong passion for teaching.
Over the past 13 years, I’ve worked one-on-one with more than 200 players, logging over 4,000 hours of coaching to help ambitious recreational players and rising professionals alike take their game, and mindset, to the next level.
From Linguistics to No Limits
A Personal Poker Coach Who Thinks Differently
My career has taken me from online tables to live seminars in Las Vegas, where I’ve led multi-day training events and created educational content for some of the poker industry’s top training platforms. My background in linguistics gives me a unique perspective as a coach - I don’t just teach poker strategy; I help players understand the language and thought patterns that shape how they learn, process information, and make decisions at the table.

How We’ll Turn Chaos Into Confidence
Poker can feel complex, abstract, and even overwhelming at times, but I believe it doesn’t have to be. My coaching approach is designed to make poker more approachable, structured, and rewarding - turning deep theory into practical clarity.
I help my students play with more intention, confidence, and enjoyment, so they can focus on what truly matters: developing mastery in one of the most fascinating games ever created.
Get Started"He Makes Complex Concepts Click"
I’ve been playing poker since the boom in ‘03 and thought I had a pretty solid understanding of the game. After one session with Matt I learned just how much I didn’t know. After a few sessions I immediately began to see results and started running deeper in tournaments more consistently. Matt has an excellent teaching style and is able to take massively complex theories and explain them in a cohesive and digestible way. I look forward to each session and I know that having Matt in my corner will lead to tournament success!

"A Fresh Perspective on the Game"
I’ve been playing poker for many years, but working with Matt has taken my game to a whole new level. He’s been instrumental in helping me adapt a GTO style into my play, while also teaching me how to look at the game from fresh and valuable perspectives I hadn’t considered before. His ability to clearly explain complex or unfamiliar topics makes even the most advanced concepts easy to understand and apply. Beyond strategy, our conversations have been insightful, motivating, and filled with practical guidance that has directly improved my results at the table. I highly recommend him to anyone serious about elevating their poker game.

"Prepared for My Best WSOP Yet"
I started working with Matt Hunt through The Alliance to prepare for the 2025 WSOP, and the experience was a game-changer. The strategies, feedback, and support I received helped me feel fully prepared and play my absolute best during the series. After the WSOP, I began weekly coaching sessions with Matt, and my game has taken a huge leap forward. He built a structured training plan just for me and walked me through deep dives into tough spots and solver work. The way Matt explains complicated situations makes them click instantly, and I can take what we discuss straight to the table. My confidence in my game has never been higher, and I feel like we are just scratching the surface. I’m excited to keep working with Matt and continuing to grow as a player.

"A True Master of Communication"
I love working with Matt because he makes relatively high-level poker concepts a lot more digestible; his background in linguistics clearly comes through, and from doing my written assessment with him, I quickly realized that I wasn't as nuanced as I thought I was. I used to play a lot of cash, and some tournaments, but working with Matt showed me just how much the tournament landscape has changed. It's cool to see quantifiable explanations for things we had suspicions about early in my career, like the role of ICM in preflop construction. This is the most cutting edge strategy I've ever studied.

FAQs
What does a poker coach do?
A poker coach helps you make sense of the game, and of your own learning process. I provide structured feedback on your study methods, review hands and in-game decisions, and help you develop clear protocols for making better choices under pressure.
I also guide players in using the latest poker technology effectively, serving as an interpreter between complex tools and practical understanding. Beyond strategy, I help you create personalized study plans, bankroll management systems, and frameworks that keep your progress consistent and measurable.
Can a poker coach help me improve faster?
Yes, a qualified coach can speed up the learning process by orders of magnitude. Poker is an incredibly complex game and it’s extremely easy to waste time studying in ways that aren’t effective, and without a coach it’s very difficult to build a consistent and useful feedback loop about your performance.
What’s the difference between a poker coach and training software?
A good coach serves as the interpreter, allowing the student to understand why the software does what it does. Since the software largely operates through brute-force logic, poker coaches use pattern recognition skills and experience to identify common threads in how solvers decide on optimal strategies, and translate those insights into usable strategies that a player can implement at the table.
How often should I meet with a poker coach?
It all depends on the level you’re at, and how much independent study work you’re doing. The more advanced you are, the more infrequently you’ll need to check in with a coach; however, weekly sessions are usually a good starting point.
What results can I expect from working with a poker coach?
Poker is a long-term skill game, and lasting success comes from improving your process - not chasing short-term results. Coaching focuses on building the habits, strategies, and thought processes that lead to consistent improvement over time.
Even if results don’t change immediately, you’ll be developing the clarity, discipline, and decision-making framework that set winning players apart. The goal isn’t just to play better hands…it’s to think like a stronger player every time you sit down at the table.
Can a poker coach help with mindset?
Absolutely, although mindset work is no substitute for having a balanced, well-rounded approach to life away from the tables. Many players’ poker mindset issues are a by-product of psychological or emotional factors unrelated to poker, and those issues require the attention of professionals in those fields. I’m happy to offer advice and support, but I would always recommend taking a holistic approach to your poker mindset, and our coaching will focus on your strategy and decision-making.
